Can’t Miss Memorial Day Event in Every State and DC
Published:
Last Updated:
For many of us, Memorial Day weekend marks the start of summer (which doesn’t officially begin until June 21). After all, the days are getting longer, the weather is getting warmer, and we’re already forgetting about the rigors of winter, shedding heavy clothing and looking forward to outdoor fun.
The upcoming three-day weekend holds the promise of beach days, music festivals, barbecues, and a vast variety of other seasonal events to enjoy in the months to come.
Of course, Memorial Day has a more solemn significance, honoring those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Days of observances began after the Civil War, when families would visit the graves of their fallen loved ones in the spring, adorning them with flags, flowers or wreaths, and reciting prayers. By 1890, every state recognized Decoration Day, as it was originally called, as a state holiday, but Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971.
However you choose to spend this weekend, from lolling in a hammock to oohing and ahhing over fireworks to heading out on the first road trip of the year, take some time to recall and appreciate the sacrifices so many have made in service to our country. They include veterans, some of whom are among America’s most decorated war heroes.
Many communities will hold parades, decorate monuments, or otherwise pay their respects. There will also be scores of special events, many of them annual traditions. We’ve included some of the ways to mark the occasion around the country, from the solemn to the jubilant. Whether you choose an event from our list or explore some of the many we didn’t mention, have a great time, drive safely, and don’t forget to take along the SPF!
Click here for the event in every state and DC that should not be missed.
In order to pick events that should not be missed during Memorial Day weekend, 24/7 Tempo reviewed local calendars for every state. We used editorial discretion to include music and food festivals, country, city and state fairs, parades, and other celebratory events.
Alabama
> Event: Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic
A three-day weekend is a good time to unwind, and what better way to do that than watching a hot air balloon race? That’s what Decatur residents have been doing on Memorial Day weekend since 1978, at the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic, the oldest race of its kind in the Mid-South. If watching the big, brightly colored orbs float through the sky is a little too mellow for you, check out the other activities on the schedule, including fireworks, a crafts fair, an auto show, and tractor parade, plus a variety of musical entertainment.
