The Largest Company in Every State

bluejayphoto / Getty Images

In the 2018 fiscal year, the 500 largest companies in the United States generated $13.7 trillion in revenue — approximately two-thirds of the U.S. GDP.

While many of the largest U.S. companies are headquartered in America’s major metropolitan areas — about one in five are either in New York, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, or Dallas — a majority of states are home to at least one Fortune 500 corporation. Factors such as the availability of talented workers, cost of living, and natural resources can affect where a company chooses to locate its headquarters and help explain the geographic distribution of the largest U.S. companies today.

Based on SEC filings and estimates of private company figures, 24/7 Wall St. determined the largest company in every state. This list is based on publicly available information, and not all companies publish revenue figures.

The largest company in a given state is often in an industry important to that state. In Nevada, for example, the largest company is the luxury casino and hotel line Las Vegas Sands Corporation.

Similarly, Amazon — the most valuable brand in the world today — is the largest company in Washington state, which is home to the headquarters of other major tech companies such as Microsoft.

In some of the more rural parts of the country, where Fortune 500 companies are less common, the largest companies are in the energy and utilities sectors. In New Mexico, West Virginia, North Dakota, and Hawaii, the largest company is a utility, and in Alaska, Utah, and Wyoming, the largest company is in the energy sector.

In some cases, the revenue figure listed is an estimate. We excluded companies from consideration when figures were not available or an estimation could not be made.

Many of the states with the most large companies rank among the states with the best economies, and many of the states without a Fortune 500 company rank among the worst states for doing business.

Methodology

To determine the largest company in every state, 24/7 Wall St. analyzed the SEC filings of public companies and estimates or annual reports of private companies in the Fortune 1000 and S&P Capital IQ database. Nonprofit hospital systems and government-owned enterprises were not considered. Subsidiaries were considered as long as they were determined to operate independently. In some cases, the revenue figure listed is an estimate. We excluded companies from consideration when figures were not available or an estimation could not be made.
