Steve Jennings/Getty Images for iHeartMedia

The year 2019 was filled with viral moments that dominated the news and social media. From fun challenges to plans to invade government property, people from all over the world helped create and spread stories that will be remembered for a long time.

Some of the moments would probably not have become so famous had it not been for high-speed internet. Not that many people would have seen the videos of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing when she was in college or Jason Statham unscrewing the top from a bottle with a single roundhouse kick. A lot can happen in a decade — here is how American life has changed in the last 10 years

Political news stories dominated 2019 as presidential campaigns geared up. But even they did not generate as much attention as certain moments during the women’s World Cup or the breaking of the supposedly unbreakable Tesla Cybertruck windows.

As the year comes to a close, 24/7 Tempo looks back at some of the most iconic moments of 2019.

> Category: Sports

Alex Morgan, the co-captain of the U.S. women’s national soccer team, helped the squad reach the 2019 World Cup final by beating England in the semi-finals. But her goal was not what made the headlines; it was her celebration — an exaggerated sip of tea, which just happens to be a beloved traditional British beverage. Morgan was accused of disrespecting her opponents, a claim she denied.

Windows of Elon Musk’s cybertruck break
> Category: Business

Tesla has been known for its groundbreaking designs of cars. Its cybertruck was several years in the making and its windows were supposed to be unbreakable. Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk said the cause was a previous hit to the truck’s door with a sledgehammer, which cracked the base of the glass.

Nancy Pelosi’s golf clap
> Category: Politics

This year’s State of the Union address was going to be standard — President Trump giving a speech about the country’s economy, pressing issues and how his administration plans to tackle them. She gave a standing ovation and nod of approval to Trump’s call to end “revenge politics.” Most people are of the opinion that she was ridiculing Trump.

Peloton bike commercial
> Category: TV

The infamous Peloton bike commercial ad is certainly among the most controversial — if not the most controversial — of the year. The ad showed a woman vlogging her workouts for a year as a way to thank her husband for the bike. The ad was instantly described as sexist. The actress from the bike commercial was later featured in an ad about a distilled spirits brand, owned by Ryan Reynolds. In it, she is seen drinking as her friends comfort her and compliment her looks, possibly as a reference to her previous commercial.

One video shows an oblong-shaped object that speeds up away from view.
