For the many Americans who enter the workforce each year, few decisions are as consequential as choosing a career. Picking a profession is only the first step, however. The next is deciding which company or organization to work for. One recently-released list identifies several companies, both large and small in a variety of industries, that appear to offer a superior work experience for employees.
In December 2019, Glassdoor, an online platform where employees can rate their employers, released its 2020 Best Places to Work list. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the ranking, which is based on feedback posted by current and former employees of companies, incorporating elements such as career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management, work-life balance, the likelihood employees would recommend the company to a friend, and six-month business outlook to identify the best companies to work for.
The companies on this list vary widely in size, industry, and typical compensation. The top five include a global consulting firm, a software company, and a fast food restaurant. They range from less than 5,000 employees to several hundred thousand. This is the largest employer in every state.
Compensation is just one component of a good work experience, and high-paid employees can certainly be unhappy at their jobs if other aspects of the work are unpleasant or unsatisfactory. Still, the companies on this list are relatively high-paying. Average salaries for common positions with Glassdoor reviews in many of the 50 best companies to work for companies regularly extend into the six-figure range.
The best companies to work for in lower-paying industries, such as supermarkets and fast food companies, have a reputation for paying well relative to the industry or offering better benefits than their competitors. Several of these companies rank among America’s highest paying companies.

Methodology:
To determine the 50 best companies to work for, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from jobs review aggregator Glassdoor’s “Best Places to Work 2020” report. Rankings are based on Glassdoor employee satisfaction reviews over the period from Oct. 23, 2018 to Oct. 21, 2019. Data on CEO approval rating also came from Glassdoor. Data on annual revenue came from SEC filings, news reports, and other sources and are for the most recent fiscal year available. In the cases where companies were private and annual revenue figures were not readily available, reported revenue ranges as listed by Glassdoor were used.
