Most Conservative Colleges in America

Courtesy of Anderson University

A 2017 Gallup study found that over the last decade and a half, Americans have become more polarized along party lines on a majority of high-profile public policy issues. The growing partisan divide also appears to be extending beyond politics, as party identity is also playing a role in where Americans get their news, where they want to live, and even where they go to college.

For many Americans, a college education is critical to intellectual development — it can teach students to think for themselves and broaden their knowledge of the world. However, many colleges and universities — even some liberal arts schools that traditionally emphasize diversity of ideas — have student bodies that are almost uniform in their political ideology.

Education and community data clearing house Niche recently released its list of the most conservative colleges in America. Niche compiled the list based on surveys of current and former students regarding their political leanings and their perception of the political leanings of the student body as a whole. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed Niche’s list to identify and review the 20 most conservative colleges in America.

Nearly every school on this list has some religious affiliation. This is no coincidence as, according to a recent Pew survey, Americans who identify as Republican are far more likely than Americans who identify as Democrats to believe in God, attend church, and pray regularly. Here is a look at the 25 most popular churches in America

Many of the colleges and universities on this list have a large roster of notable alumni. With such staunch conservative values, it may not be surprising that many of these schools have produced prominent Republican politicians that have served on Capitol Hill and in state houses across the country. Here is a list of the longest-serving Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Methodology

To determine the most conservative colleges in America, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from education data clearinghouse Niche’s “2020 Most Conservative Colleges in America” list. Niche’s ranking is based on student surveys about both personal political leanings as well as opinions about the political leanings of other students.

Data on undergraduate enrollment and admission rate came from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and are for the 2017-2018 school year. Data on the median earnings of individuals who entered university in the 2004-05 academic year and were employed 10 years later also came from IPEDS. Data on the popularity of undergraduate majors is based on IPEDS data on the number of federal loan borrowers who graduated with a degree in that major in the 2016-2017 school year.
