Top Selling Products From Each State

Tsikhan Kuprevich / iStock / Getty Images Plus

The U.S. economy is far less dependent on trade than most countries. The total value of all U.S. exports accounted for just 11.7% of GDP in 2019 — a fraction of the 30.6% global average.

Still, on a state by state basis, exports can be a significant source of revenue. With the sole exception of Hawaii, each state exported at least $1 billion in goods and services in 2019. The top export in a given state can also reveal a great deal about the kind of industries that are at the core of a given state’s economy.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed export data from the U.S. Census Bureau to determine the top export from each state.

In many states, the top exports are natural resources that underpin much of the overall economy. For example, coal is the top export in states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia, where coal mining has historically been a major economic sector. Similarly, crude oil is the top export in North Dakota and Texas, states home to some of the largest proved reserves in the country.

In other states, the top export represents the kinds of companies that operate in the state. For example, Michigan, home to the headquarters of the Big Three U.S. automakers, exported $8.3 billion in automobile parts in 2019, more than any other product. Similarly, Washington, home to many aerospace manufacturers, including a major Boeing assembly operation located outside of Seattle, exported more aircraft and aircraft parts last year than any other product. Here is a complete list of the best company to work for in every state

Destinations for U.S. exports span the globe. The largest markets for American goods were Canada, Mexico, and China, as of 2018. However, due to the trade war between the U.S. and China, the total value of products shipped to China has likely declined considerably in recent months. Here is a look at how China grew to become a global economic force

Alabama
> Largest export: Automobiles
> 2019 Automobiles export value: $6.7 billion
> Automobiles as share of total state 2019 exports: 32.2%

Alabama’s highest-value export is cars and passenger vehicles. In 1997, the assembly plant in Vance, Alabama, began producing Mercedes-Benz cars, and since then the auto industry has expanded in the state.

Alabama is now home to Honda, Hyundai, Mazda Toyota, and Mercedes-Benz vehicle assembly plants. Alabama exported $6.7 billion worth of automobiles in 2019, an 85% increase from the previous year. Car exports account for 32% of the value of all exports through the state that year.

Alaska
> Largest export: Fish
> 2019 Fish export value: $1.3 billion
> Fish as share of total state 2019 exports: 26.1%

Alaska shipped $1.3 billion worth of fish overseas in 2019, more than any other product in the state and equivalent to just over one-quarter of the state’s total exports. A notoriously dangerous industry, Alaska’s commercial fishing industry claimed 31 lives a year on average in the 1980s, although those numbers have declined in recent years. Still, the state’s fishermen face other problems at the moment. The harvests of salmon — one of the state’s most popular fish — in 2019 and 2020 have been poor, while prices have continued to be low due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Louisiana
> Largest export: Liquid petroleum
> 2019 Liquid petroleum export value: $20.6 billion
> Liquid petroleum as share of total state 2019 exports: 32.3%

Petroleum is Louisiana’s most valuable export by a wide margin. The Bayou State exported more than $20 billion worth of petroleum in 2019, equal to more than 32% of the total value of the state’s exports that year.

While petroleum drilling has been an integral part of the state’s economy for decades, the industry has suffered some major setbacks in recent years. Hurricane Katrina damaged offshore rigs in 2005, curbing extraction for months. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded, killing 11 workers and spilling millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf. Due to reduced oil prices and climbing production costs, Louisiana’s total crude oil output hit a six-decade low in 2019.

Maine
> Largest export: Crustaceans
> 2019 Crustaceans export value: $368.4 million
> Crustaceans as share of total state 2019 exports: 13.5%

Crustaceans, such as lobster, account for more than 13% of the $2.7 billion value of goods exported from Maine in 2019. While just over half of Maine’s total exports, including lobster, end up in Canada, Maine would likely export even more of its top product if not for the U.S. trade war with China. In the first half of 2018, Maine exported $87 million worth of lobster to China. However, following tariffs imposed in July 2018, demand for Maine lobster in China dropped a staggering 84%.

In recent years, Maryland has also cultivated a new export market — petroleum gas. While the state has very few natural gas resources and in 2017 became the third U.S. state to ban fracking, in early 2018, the state opened a terminal for the export of natural gas in Chesapeake Bay. The terminal — which employs 4,500 workers and was the most expensive private sector project in Maryland history, according to some officials — mostly ships natural gas from Pennsylvania and other surrounding states. In 2019, Maryland exported $1.5 billion of petroleum gas, the second most of any product category in the state.

Methodology:

24/7 Wall St. used 2019 export data from the U.S. Census Bureau to identify the product category with the highest total value exported from each state during that year. We aggregated product categories using Harmonized System codes from the six-digit level of detail to the four-digit level of detail. The product category with the highest total export value in a given state was considered that state’s leading export. Data on total export value and international trading partners by state also came from the Census Bureau and are for 2019.
