Top Selling Products From Each State

The U.S. economy is far less dependent on trade than most countries. The total value of all U.S. exports accounted for just 11.7% of GDP in 2019 — a fraction of the 30.6% global average.
Still, on a state by state basis, exports can be a significant source of revenue. With the sole exception of Hawaii, each state exported at least $1 billion in goods and services in 2019. The top export in a given state can also reveal a great deal about the kind of industries that are at the core of a given state’s economy.
24/7 Wall St. reviewed export data from the U.S. Census Bureau to determine the top export from each state.
In many states, the top exports are natural resources that underpin much of the overall economy. For example, coal is the top export in states like Pennsylvania and West Virginia, where coal mining has historically been a major economic sector. Similarly, crude oil is the top export in North Dakota and Texas, states home to some of the largest proved reserves in the country.
In other states, the top export represents the kinds of companies that operate in the state. For example, Michigan, home to the headquarters of the Big Three U.S. automakers, exported $8.3 billion in automobile parts in 2019, more than any other product. Similarly, Washington, home to many aerospace manufacturers, including a major Boeing assembly operation located outside of Seattle, exported more aircraft and aircraft parts last year than any other product. Here is a complete list of the best company to work for in every state.
Destinations for U.S. exports span the globe. The largest markets for American goods were Canada, Mexico, and China, as of 2018. However, due to the trade war between the U.S. and China, the total value of products shipped to China has likely declined considerably in recent months. Here is a look at how China grew to become a global economic force.

Still, the state’s fishermen face other problems at the moment. The harvests of salmon — one of the state’s most popular fish — in 2019 and 2020 have been poor, while prices have continued to be low due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Utah exported $8.9 billion worth of gold in 2019, far more than any other product. Gold accounts for over half the value of the state’s annual exports while no other export product category accounts for more than 3% of the state’s total export value. The first gold discovery in the state was reported in 1858, and the largest gold-producing mine in the state is the Bingham Canyon Copper Mine near Salt Lake City. Most gold in the state is produced as a byproduct of silver, lead, copper, and zinc mining. The top destinations for Utah’s exports are the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan.

Virginia
> Largest export: Coal
> 2019 Coal export value: $2.0 billion
> Coal as share of total state 2019 exports: 11.2%
Virginia’s coal exports grew by over 80% from 2018 to 2019, reaching nearly $2 billion and accounting for over one-ninth of the state’s total exports. The value of coal exports was nearly triple the value of the next leading export from Virginia, electronic integrated circuits, which had an export value of $694 million in 2019.
Washington
> Largest export: Aircraft and parts
> 2019 Aircraft and parts export value: $25.4 billion
> Aircraft and parts as share of total state 2019 exports: 42.1%
Washington exported a staggering $25.4 billion in aircraft and parts in 2019. The state is home to the operations of over 1,400 aerospace companies, including industry giants like Boeing and SpaceX. The state is the final point of assembly for Boeing’s 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, and a majority of 787 Dreamliner airplanes. Over the last century, over 31,000 aircraft have been assembled in Washington state.
Though the industry remains dominant, international shipments of aircraft and parts have fallen precipitously in recent years, with total export value falling by 39.2% from 2018 to 2019.

West Virginia
> Largest export: Coal
> 2019 Coal export value: $2.3 billion
> Coal as share of total state 2019 exports: 38.1%
With coal a central part of the state’s economy for more than 100 years, West Virginia exports more bituminous coal than any other state. Though the bulk of coal extracted in the state stays in the country, West Virginia exported more than $2.3 billion worth in 2019 alone, accounting for over one-third of the state’s total exports. As many nations are turning to cleaner energy, the demand for coal is declining. West Virginia’s 2019 coal exports were about half of what they were the year before.
Wisconsin
> Largest export: Aircraft and parts
> 2019 Aircraft and parts export value: $526.9 million
> Aircraft and parts as share of total state 2019 exports: 2.4%
Aerospace companies operating in Wisconsin exported over $500 million worth of aircraft and aircraft parts in 2019. Though it is the largest export product category in Wisconsin, aircraft and parts exports make up just 2.4% of the state’s total exports — the lowest share of any state’s leading export. About one-third of all of Wisconsin exports are sold to Canada. The Experimental Aircraft Association hosts its annual Airventure event in Oshkosh, attracting 600,000 people annually and briefly making the Oshkosh airport the busiest in the world.
Wyoming
> Largest export: Carbonates
> 2019 Carbonates export value: $1.0 billion
> Carbonates as share of total state 2019 exports: 74.9%
Carbonates, which includes sodium carbonate, are by far Wyoming’s most valuable export. Accounting for nearly three-quarters of the state’s total export value, carbonates represent a bigger share of the state’s exports than any single product in any state.
Trona, a compound of sodium carbonate, can be processed and turned into baking soda. Wyoming has the world’s largest known reserve of the mineral, at around 127 billion tons, about a third of which can be accessed and mined. Wyoming mines employ over 2,000 people.
Methodology:
24/7 Wall St. used 2019 export data from the U.S. Census Bureau to identify the product category with the highest total value exported from each state during that year. We aggregated product categories using Harmonized System codes from the six-digit level of detail to the four-digit level of detail. The product category with the highest total export value in a given state was considered that state’s leading export. Data on total export value and international trading partners by state also came from the Census Bureau and are for 2019.
