The U.S. economy has continued to show signs of a strong broad based growth in 2021, with consumer spending increasing 1.3% in October compared to the month before, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. After a steep drop in personal consumption expenditures in 2020 due to COVID-19, spending has been on an upward trajectory.
Companies across the country will hope to capitalize on the uptick in spending. Each state — with one exception — is home to at least one company with over $1 billion in sales in the last year. In total, these 50 companies reported sales of more than $3.4 trillion in their most recent year. In many cases, these companies are household names and rank as the largest and most successful American company in their industry.
To determine the largest company in every state, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed Dun & Bradstreet’s 2021 Business Rankings. Only businesses headquartered in a state were considered for that state and ranked based on their total sales for 2021. Industry classifications came from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In many states, the largest company represents an industry that has become synonymous with the state itself, like agriculture, oil, automobiles, technology, and more. This is the most iconic job in every state.
