Florida has been growing rapidly for decades, surpassing New York to become the third most populous state in the country in 2014. Last year, Florida reached another historic milestone, reporting a nation-leading net population increase of 1.9%.
These numbers do not tell the full story, however. Even as Americans are flocking to the Sunshine State at a record pace, many are also moving out. According to government data, nearly 470,000 Floridians packed up and moved to a different part of the country in 2021. Only California and New York reported higher levels of outbound migration that year.
Explanations for why so many Floridians are relocating vary, and are often personal. Family considerations, changes in marital status, and job transfers are the reasons behind millions of moves in the U.S. each year, but other circumstances specific to Florida are also likely pushing many out of the state.
Every year, parts of the state – particularly along the coast – face the threat of hurricanes and storm surges. Between 2018 and 2022 alone, Florida was hit with 19 weather-related disasters that caused over $1 billion in damage, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In fact, of the 61 tropical cyclones in the U.S. since 1980 that resulted in over $1 billion in damage, over half hit the state of Florida.
No matter the explanation, nearly half a million people left Florida for a different state in 2021, and some parts of the country have drawn in far more ex-Floridians than others.
Using data on state-to-state migration flows from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states the most people from Florida are moving to. The 50 places on this list – Washington D.C. and every state except Florida – are ranked by the share of residents in 2021 who lived in Florida in 2020. For each state and Washington D.C., we also reviewed net population change from July 1, 2020 to July 1, 2021 with data from U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program.
Georgia and Alabama are the only two states that border Florida – and each ranks among the top 10 destinations for outbound Floridians. Both states offer a far lower cost of living than Florida, and each had a stronger job market in 2021, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (Here is a look at the cities that will add the jobs by 2060 according to economists.)
Additionally, two of the top five states on this list – North Carolina and Texas – are drawing in new residents from all over the U.S., with net population increases of 116,440 and 326,390, respectively, in 2021 – ranking them among the three fastest growing states. (Here is a look at the best states to live in.)
