False start. Illegal formation. Pass interference. Holding. Intentional grounding. These are just five of the many penalties that can be assessed during NFL games. Terrion Arnold of the Detroit Lions knows a lot about penalties. After getting called for pass interference, Arnold’s defensive-back coach has said that he is not worried. When players of any football team commit a penalty, they are usually penalized in yardage. Pass interference comes with a ten yard penalty. Penalties have the potential to significantly change the game. Football fans usually aren’t too happy to see this, though.
But what teams are drawing the most penalties, and how many yards have been lost? Using data from The Football Database, 24/7 Wall St. identified the most penalized teams in the NFL during the 2023 regular season. We ranked these 32 teams based on the total number of penalties they were called on, but excluded declined or offsetting penalties. You might be surprised to see that even the lowest penalized team had over 70 penalties assessed to them — with the highest penalized team clocking in at over 100. This contributed to significant yardage losses and potentially game losses as well. Why We’re Covering Football
The 32 teams in the National Football League have to fight for every yard they gain. But the teamwork and effort required to move the ball up the field can be quickly undone by a single player drawing a penalty. Whether accidental or intentional, penalties are costly. During the 2023 season, every team lost at least one yard to penalties for every nine yards gained on offense. The most penalized team in the league lost one penalty yard for every 4.8 yards gained last year.
