Short Interest Changes Mixed in 3D Printing Sector

Short interest in three of the five 3D printing companies we follow rose in the last two week period. The following information is based on data reported for the period ended April 30.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) rose 2.1% to 30.07 million shares. Some 30.8% of the company’s stock is short. Days to cover is 6. In the two-week short interest period to April 30th, the share price rose fractionally but is down nearly 50% for the year to date as of Friday’s close. The stock’s 52-week range is $41.05 to $97.28, and shares closed at $47.64 on Friday.

Short interest in Proto Labs Inc. (NYSE: PRLB) decreased by 10.6% to 2.39 million shares, or 10.6% of the company’s float. Days to cover is 5. Shares were down about 12% in the two-week period and closed Friday night at $63.77, down 10.4% year-to-date. The stock’s 52-week range is $51.19 to $89.97.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest rise 8.8% in the last two weeks of April to 3.79 million shares, or about 9% of the company’s float. Days to cover is 3. Shares lost about 1% in the two-week period and have since slipped another 9%, closing down about 4.7% Friday night at $89.9. They’ve dropped more than 33% this year. The stock’s 52-week range is $74.54 to $138.10.

Short interest in The ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) rose just 0.2% to 3.54 million shares. About 33.9% of the company’s shares are now held short. Shares of ExOne rose 35% in the two-week period and closed at $47.64 Friday , down nearly 47% year to date. The stock’s 52-week range is $24.34 to $78.80 and days to cover is 9. ExOne reports first quarter earnings on Wednesday and is expected to post a loss of $0.12 a share on revenue of $9.87 million.

Voxeljet AG (NYSE: VJET) saw short interest fall 44.2% to 1.42 million shares, with a days to cover number of 3. Since coming public at $19 in mid-October the share price is down about 53%. Year-to-date shares are down nearly 66%, but rose more than 6% in the two week period to April 30th. The stock closed at $13.60 on Friday in a post-IPO range of $13.37 to $70.00. The 52-week low was posted on Friday.
