For the three-month period ending in October, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) lost 0.9% share of the U.S. smartphone subscriber market and now leads all original equipment makers (OEMs) with a 43.3% share. Its July share was 44.2%. Samsung’s share added 0.6% to total 27.9%, compared with its July total of 27.3%.
LG Electronics added 0.9% to a July share of 8.7% to a yield an October share of 9.8%. Motorola’s share rose 0.2%, from 4.9% in July to 5.1% in October, and HTC dropped 0.2%, from 3.5% to 3.3% share.
The data are contained in the latest report on the U.S. smartphone market from comScore and is based on a three-month average for August, September and October compared with the three-month period that ended in July 2015.
On the operating system (platform) front, Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOGL) Android added 1.5 points of share, from 51.4% to 52.9%, and remains the top platform. Apple lost 0.9 points, from 44.2% in July to 43.3% in October. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) dropped 0.2% to post a 2.7% share, and BlackBerry Ltd. (NASDAQ: BBRY) lost 0.3% to post a 1.0% share in October.
The top five smartphone apps in the comScore survey were Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) with a 77.3% reach for all smartphone users at least 18 years old, YouTube (61.2%), Facebook Messenger (60.0%), Google Play (52.6%) and Google Search (51.1%). YouTube reclaimed the second spot in the ranking from Facebook Messenger. Pandora Radio from Pandora Media Inc. (NYSE: P), with a reach of 41.2%, dropped from seventh to eighth place, behind Google Maps and Gmail. Instagram finished ninth and Yahoo Stocks rounded out the top 10.
