Short Interest Rises in Major Semiconductors in May

The short interest data have come out for the May 13 settlement date. It is important to note that semiconductor trends are considered to be leading indicators of technology and broader electronics demand.

The May 13 short interest data have been compared with the previous report. On the broad scope, short interest moves increased in these selected semiconductor stocks.

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) saw its short interest increase to 81.29 million shares. The previous level was 78.80 million. Shares closed Tuesday at $31.06, in a 52-week trading range of $24.87 to $35.59.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ: AMD) had a short interest decrease to 84.63 million shares. The previous level was 91.08 million, and it compared to the late July level of 157.66 million, easily the highest in the past 52 weeks. Shares of AMD closed Tuesday at $4.20, in a 52-week range of $1.61 to $4.21.


Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) saw its short interest increase to 18.3 million, compared to the previous period, in which 15.12 million shares were reported short. Qualcomm shares closed Tuesday at $55.59, in a 52-week range of $42.24 to $71.32.

Applied Materials Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) short interest decreased to 12.77 million shares. The previous reading was 13.78 million. The current reading is the second-lowest of the year. Shares closed Tuesday at $23.49, in a 52-week range of $14.25 to $23.49.

Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ: MU) saw its short interest increase to 64.18 million shares from the previous reading of 58.73 million. Shares of Micron closed Tuesday at $11.49, in a 52-week range of $9.31 to $28.62.

Broadcom Ltd. (NASDAQ: AVGO), formerly Avago Technologies, saw its short interest increase to 4.88 million shares from the previous level of 4.48 million. Shares closed Tuesday at $151.42, in a 52-week range of $100.00 to $159.65
