Short Interest in 3D Printing Stocks Continues to Dip With Share Prices

Short interest during the two-week period ending July 31 rose on just one of four 3D printing stocks we follow. As of that date, three of the four stocks had seen share prices down sharply from 2017 highs.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) rose by 1.8% to 25.33 million shares. Some 23.2% of the company’s float was short. Days to cover rose from 11 to 12. In the two-week short interest period, the share price fell by about 6.7%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $12.34 to $23.70, and shares closed at $12.83 on Wednesday, up about 1.1% on the day. As of July 31, 3D Systems’ shares had added more than 26% since the beginning of the year, although that is well below the peak of 75% in mid-May.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest fall by 6% in the last two weeks of July to about 3.98 million shares, or 8% of the company’s float. Days to cover remained unchanged at nine. The share price rose by about 1.4% in the two-week period, and the stock closed at $22.29 on Wednesday, down about 0.5% on the day. The 52-week range is $16.37 to $30.88. Shares were up about 45% for the year to date on July 31, a far cry from the 85% gain posted in mid-May. The company reported second-quarter results yesterday.

Short interest in ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) dipped by 0.6% to 1.92 million shares. About 20.5% of the company’s shares are now short. ExOne’s share price fell by about 2.3% in the two-week period. The stock’s 52-week range is $9.13 to $16.15, and shares closed at $9.88 on Wednesday, up about 1.1% for the day. Days to cover rose from 23 to 25. The share price was up nearly 21% for the year to date on July 31, again way below the peak of nearly 52% in mid-May.

Short interest in Voxeljet A.G. (NYSE: VJET) decreased by 0.5% to 416,573 American depositary shares, with days to cover rising from five to 10. The share price fell by about 2.6% in the two-week period. It closed at $4.20 on Wednesday, down 2.5% for the day, in a 52-week range of $2.61 to $6.00. Voxeljet was up about 55% for the year to date through July 31, the stock’s highest level of the year.
