Fading Short Interest in 3D Printing Stocks

During the two-week reporting period ending May 15, short interest rose on two of four 3D printing stocks we follow. Trading action also slowed down on three of the four stocks.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) fell by 2.2% to 34.29 million shares. Some 31.3% of the company’s float was short. Days to cover fell from 23 to six. In the two-week short interest period, the share price soared by 26.8%. The stock’s 52-week trading range is $7.92 to $22.57, and shares closed at $12.22 on Thursday, down about 1.2% on the day.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest fall by 5.5% in the first two weeks of May to about 8.51 million shares, or 16.9% of the company’s float. Days to cover dropped from 15 to seven. The share price rose by about 6.9% in the period, and the stock closed at $19.25 on Thursday, down about 2.7% on the day, in a 52-week range of $17.17 to $28.88.

Short interest in The ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) jumped 21.2% to 2.88 million shares. About 29.6% of the company’s shares were short. ExOne’s share price fell by about 5.6% in the two weeks ending May 15. The stock’s 52-week range is $6.23 to $14.23, and shares closed at $6.33 on Thursday, down about 0.2% for the day. Days to cover fell from 23 to 15.

Short interest in Voxeljet A.G. (NYSE: VJET) increased by 1.8% to 439,745 American depositary shares, with days to cover rising from 16 to 19. Voxeljet rose by about 2.7% in the two-week period, and it closed at $3.63 on Thursday, down about 0.3% for the day in a 52-week range of $3.07 to $6.37.
