Piper Jaffray survey: Record 82% of US teens have iPhones

Sixteen percent have an Apple Watch; 23% hope to get one by next spring.

From a note to clients by Michael Olson that landed on my desktop Monday:

Apple’s share of smartphone ownership was unchanged in the Piper Jaffray Taking Stock With Teens survey. Of ~8,500 respondents, 82% have an iPhone, the highest percentage we have seen in our survey. The iPhone may have room to move higher, however, with 86% of teens anticipating their next phone to be an iPhone, the highest ever recorded in our survey (up from 84% in Spring-18). Android was the runner up with 10%, down from 11% in the spring. The Apple Watch was the top smartwatch among teens, garnering 16% share, with the Samsung Gear next on the list at 2%. 23% of teens plan to purchase an Apple Watch in the next six months, up from 20% in the spring. Overall, we view the survey data as a sign that Apple’s place as the dominant device brand among teens remains intact.

Maintains Overweight rating and $250 price target.

My take: Pipe Jaffray’s semi-annual Taking Stock With Teens survey tends to draw from well-heeled school districts and may not reflect the U.S. population as a whole. But still.
