The US Department of Commerce is crying about China’s plan to use a local standard for next generation cell service. It argues that the move does not give consumers a choice.
According to The Associated Press, a Commerce Department office put it this way: "We should let the market determine this. If the government chooses one, that is unfair to customers." Some reports say that Chinese cellular companies would like to look at foreign standards but evidence of that is hard to pin down. The Chinese government takes a dim view of dissent.
Of course, the Chinese may object to some US laws that prevent them from doing several things inside the US like smoking in restaurants and driving over 70 mph. The Commerce Department had no comment on that.
