Apple (AAPL) iPhone Does Well In Bogus Nielsen Survey

Nielsen says that the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone is the No.1 mobile phone in the US, with a market share of 4%. The number is flawed because the iPhone number includes all models of the handset.

The RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry ranks second in the survey with a 3.7% share, but this figure only includes its 800 series phones. Its “Pearl” and “Storm” models are also in the Top 10 of the Nielsen list with 1.4% and 1.2% market shares respectively.

The Nielsen numbers demonstrate how the smartphone and investor public can get unrealistic pictures of the iPhone’s supremacy. LG has four phones on the Top 10 list. Together their share is much greater than Apple’s–4.5%.

The Nielsen research group should know better.
