Apple App Store Downloads Hit 10 Billion

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store downloads reached 10 billion, more than one download for each man, woman, and child on earth. Many experts believe that these applications are what tethers many iPhone and iPad users to their devices. The apps allow users of Apple portable devices to customize their iPads and iPhone is a way which has no precedent anywhere else in the personal electronics world.

Because many of the Apps are free and Apple takes only a modest cut of the money for paid applications, the download store may never bring Apple a great deal of revenue, but its role within the Apple ecosystem is more important than any profits it may bring.

The only challenge to the App Store is a similar offering from Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) for its Android mobile OS. Google’s download total, however, is only a small fractions of Apple’s even though Android’s share of the mobile operating system market  has passed Apple in the US.
