China to Eliminate Roaming Charges and Long Distance Fees

In what should trigger an increase in mobile device use in the world’s largest mobile market, China will eliminate roaming charges and long distance fees. The charge will come on October 1.

The People’s Daily said about the cancellation of these charges and fees:

China is planning to eliminate mobile roaming charges and fees for long-distance calls nationwide starting from October 1 of this year.

China’s top three telecom giants, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have each acknowledged the changes during a news conference on Monday.

The announcement comes one day after Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that China will cancel the roaming charges and fees while delivering a government work report on the opening day of the fifth session of the 12th National People’s Congress.

China Daily reported that the country had 1.3 billion mobile phone users at the end of 2015, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

In theory, people who have to pay fees for calls limit their mobile device use. The elimination of these fees should boost usage and help businesses that do business via mobile platforms.
