Twitter Goes Silent

The estimated 300 million Twitter users are not having many exchanges today. Just six weeks after another outage, users have today begun experiencing another outage where they are unable to read their Twitter streams or send their own messages.

Today’s failure was first reported around 11:00 a.m. ET, and Twitter staff have confirmed that its engineers are chasing the problem. The previous outage was blamed on a cascading bug that travelled through the company’s infrastructure clobbering everything in its path.

Twitter’s well-known “fail whale” had not made an appearance yet today. The site just posts a simple message:

Twitter is currently down for <%= reason %>.
We expect to be back in <%= deadline %>. For more information, check out Twitter Status. Thanks for your patience!

On Twitter’s status page:

Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.

This is not a good time for this to happen. The company is expecting a boost in traffic from its deal with NBC to provide sharing of news and other material from the Olympic games.
