Ford Pickups Top Unit Sales in June as GM Gains Share

Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) sold 77,895 F-Series pickups in June, topping sales of General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) Chevy Silverado by 27,380 units. Adding in sales of the GMC Sierra, Ford outsold GM in the pickup wars by 11,637 units.

Ford F-Series pickup sales rose 9.8% year over year in June, compared with an increase of 1.7% in Silverado sales and a drop of 8.3% in Sierra sales.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.’s (NYSE: FCAU) Ram pickup sales rose 5% year over year to 43,073 units sold in the month.

Other full-size pickups on offer in the United States are the Tundra from Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) and the Nissan Titan. Toyota sales for June totaled 9,843, up 4.3% year over year. The Titan sold 4,199 units in June, up a huge 369% compared with June 2016.

Sales of GM’s midsize Colorado pickup rose 6.4% to 9,631 units, and sales of the GMC Canyon fell 26% to 2,516 in June. Nissan’s midsize Frontier pickup sold 8,144 units in June, down 0.3% year over year. Toyota sold 16,443 of the company’s midsize Tacoma pickups, up 4% compared with May of last year. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) sold 2,730 units of its Ridgeline midsize pickup, up from 2,472 in June of 2016.

In the full-size pickup segment, June sales of 187,226 vehicles from the Detroit Three pencils out to a Ford market share of 41.6% (a month-over-month decrease of 0.4 points). GM’s share came in at 27% for the Chevy Silverado (up 2.8 points) and 8.4% (down 0.6 points) for the GMC Sierra. Ram’s market share totaled 23% (down 1.8 points).
