The second-largest market for the Model S from Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) is Norway. And in the first quarter of 2014, the Model S is the best-selling car in the country. In fact, in March the Model S sold more cars than any model ever in Norwegian history.

Tesla sold 1,493 cars to Norway’s drivers in March, with monthly sales in the country for all makes totaling 13,861, according to auto industry research firm focus2move. In February, the Nissan Leaf was the best-selling model in Norway, with sales of 434 cars. Tesla sold more than three times as many in March.

The top-selling brand in Norway is Volkswagen, with Tesla ranked second. Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM) ranked third in brand sales in March, with 1,441 cars sold. Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) was seventh on the list, with total sales of 700, and General Motors Co.’s (NYSE: GM) Opel was 14th with sales of 334. Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (NYSE: HMC) sold 236 vehicles and ranked 19th.

By model, the Volkswagen Golf trailed the Tesla Model S to finish second in the ranking with a total of 624 cars sold. Nissan landed two models in the top 10, including its all-electric Leaf. Other all-electric vehicles among the top 10 sellers were Mitsubishi’s Outlander SUV and the BMW i3.

Norway offers generous tax incentives for electric-car owners and there are free charging stations all over the county. Tesla has four dealers in Norway.

Tesla shares rose more than 6% on Wednesday, after the company filed an appeal in New Jersey challenging recent legislation banning the company from directly selling cars in the state. Shares are up nearly 3% in premarket trading Thursday morning, at $233.00 in a 52-week range of $40.33 to $265.00.
