FCA Recalls 1.8 Million Ram Pickups for Gearbox Issue

courtesy of FCA US LLC

On Friday, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU) announced that the company is recalling a total of 1.8 million Ram pickups for model years 2009 through part of 2017 to repair a problem with the vehicle’s gearbox.

The company is recalling approximately 1.48 million of the pickups sold in the United States, nearly 250,000 sold in Canada, 43,000 sold in Mexico and 15,000 sold outside the NAFTA region.

The recall affects only those trucks equipped with steering-column mounted shifters. Rotary-dial shifters and floor-mounted shifters are not included.

According to the company, a review of field data showed that Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) may not function properly if subjected to specific high-temperature conditions for prolonged periods. The conditions are consistent with those that occur when there is protracted brake-pedal application while a vehicle is idling in park.

If BTSI becomes disabled, a vehicle’s shifter may be moved out of park without brake-pedal application, or the presence of a key in the ignition. In such circumstances, a vehicle may exhibit inadvertent movement — if its parking brake has not been set.

The complete list of affected vehicles is available in the company’s recall statement.

No firm date for when customers will be notified was given in the statement, only that customers will be notified when they may schedule service to repair the problem.

FCA has issued five recall notices in the past four months, all unrelated and affecting different vehicle models. The largest involved more than 700,000 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs to fix a problem with defective air bags.
