The world of sports cars is changing — and the era of electric vehicles is upon us. Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N is an electric sports car with up to 641 horsepower. Laden with features like the ability to adjust to different road conditions, acoustic feedback and powertrain sounds, and a simulated 8-speed N Dual Clutch Transmission, Hyundai has shared that the IONIQ 5 N is the fastest car the company has ever made, even considering both electric and gas vehicles. Still, at a max speed of 163 miles per hour, the IONIQ 5 N does not even come close to some of the fastest sports cars in the world. And it definitely couldn’t, like some cars, outrun a small plane (which can usually fly at up to 180 mils per hour). So if you’re looking for speed, the IONIQ 5 N can hang — but if you’re looking for intense speed? Look elsewhere. (Here are two EV stocks to buy and one to sell.)

Many sports car drivers love the thrill of ripping down the roadway in a gorgeous vehicle. But if they’re looking to get their hands on the fastest car imaginable, where should they look? To find the speediest sports cars, 24/7 Wall St. took data from the online automotive news publication, Top Speed, ranking the Fastest Cars In the World based on their record-high speeds. We have added supplemental information from TopSpeed on details such as price, horsepower, type of engine, and zero-to-60 miles per hour acceleration time. You’ll find familiar favorites on the list. However, you’ll also find some powerful lesser-known brands made the cut as well. Just don’t expect to see major brands, such as Ford or Dodge. These fastest sports cars are expensive, boutique brands, with most costing in the millions of dollars. Unsurprisingly, it takes a great deal of engineering and technology to design cars this powerful, and they aren’t for the average car buyer.

Why We’re Writing About the World’s Fastest Cars

It wasn’t very long ago that people believed achieving a speed of 300 miles per hour was impossible. Today, the fastest car has surpassed that. The automotive industry continues to transform at a rapid pace, with each brand trying to outdo the others. Additionally, the global sports car market is big business, with revenues in the billions. And finally, autophiles who are fascinated with the latest innovations must keep up with the changing landscape.
