Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) has stopped its sales of the AK15 and other semi-automatic rifles, but they are still available at a number of places online.

In an article from Bearing Arms that was highly referenced in the media, the author wrote:

Walmart’s Senior Director for Corporate Communications Kory Lundberg has confirmed rumors that Walmart will no longer be stocking modern sports rifles such as the AR-15, nor semi-automatic shotguns with a magazine capacity of seven or more rounds.

Lundberg states that politics played no role in the chain’s decision to stop selling the rifles and shotguns, and that it was purely a business decision that drove an inventory correction.

Wal-Mart said the decision was a financial one, not one made due to outside pressure.

Someone is making money on the sales of assault rifles, or has decided to sell them at a loss. Several websites carry the AK15 and rifles with even higher capacity.

Among the sites selling these sorts of guns is Atlantic Firearms. For the time being, its pages for the sale of the AK15 are not available. However, there are many models of the AK47, which include the RAK AK47 Sunburst — for $1,339:

Russian Classic AK 47 Rifle Russian Sunburst, 762x39mm RAK 47, semi auto, 100% new, Imported Semi auto gas operated carbine. The base rifle built at the Russian Izmash arsenal & imported for the US AK market, receiver marked made in Russia Izmash Arsenal, Saiga 762x39mm. Once in the US they are carefully converted into the legal AK47 format to comply with current import regulations. All New & Featuring Russian 16 inch chrome lined threaded barrel with original 45 Slant style flash hider, muzzle brake & Bayonet Lug, G2 fire control, Beautiful Custom Russian Sunburst stock set with matching Wood Pistol Grip for the Classic old school AK look! One Year warranty.

“It will take high capacity magazines.” Not bad, if the owner can find one, and he or she probably can.

Wal-Mart may have ended the sales of assault-type rifles, but they appear easy to get elsewhere.
