10 US Cities With the Longest Life Expectancies

An average American could expect to live 78.8 years in 2015, a slight drop from 78.9 in 2014. The U.S. ranked 42nd in the world in 2014, a full five years shorter than leaders Hong Kong and Japan.

Within the United States, life expectancy varied from a high of 81.3 in Hawaii to 75.0 in Mississippi. And life expectancies within states varied as well. In Florida, the difference between the shortest life expectancy (76.4 years in Panama City) and the longest (83.5 in the Naples metro area) was 7.1 years. In Vermont, New Hampshire, Delaware and Rhode Island, the city with the shortest and longest life expectancy was the same: Burlington, Vermont; Manchester, New Hampshire; Dover, Delaware; and Providence, Rhode Island.

The cities on the list where life expectancies are the longest tend to have higher household incomes and a smaller share of residents living in poverty than metro areas with shorter life expectancies. Poverty rates are lower than the national level in two-thirds of these 50 cities.
