Mortalities From Car Crashes Represent 2.4% of World’s Deaths

The deadliest parts of the world for road crashes tended to be in South America, Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia, while the safest area is Europe, according to the findings of a report from the University of Michigan.

For the world overall, deaths from road crashes represented 2.4% of fatalities from all causes, according to the report, titled “Mortality From Road Crashes in 183 Countries: A Comparison With Leading Causes of Death.”

The study looked at the estimated fatalities in 2015 from all causes — road crashes, malignant neoplasms (malignant tumors), heart disease and strokes for the 183 World Health Organization countries that provided the raw data for the analysis. The variables were fatalities from road crashes as a percentage of fatalities from each of the other three causes of death and from all causes.

The highest percentage of road fatalities was in Oman (9.4%) and the lowest in Sweden, Micronesia and the United Kingdom (0.3%). The percentage in the United States was 1.3%, ranking the nation 129th on the list.

Road crashes were responsible for the highest percentages of all mortalities in the following 10 nations: Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Kuwait, Jordan, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Rwanda and Sao Tome and Principe.

The 10 countries with the lowest road-crash mortality percentages were: Sweden, the United Kingdom, Micronesia, Kiribati, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Norway and Switzerland. Twenty of the 25 countries with the lowest percentages were in Europe.

Fatalities from road crashes for the world corresponded to 15.4% of fatalities from malignant neoplasms (tumors). The highest percentage was in Gambia (122.7%) and the lowest in the United Kingdom (1.1%). The percentage in the United States was 5.8%, ranking it 135th.

The 25 countries with the highest percentages were all located either in Africa or the Middle East. Twenty of the 25 countries with the lowest percentages were in Europe.

For the world, fatalities from road crashes compared with 15.3% of mortalities from heart disease. The highest percentage was in Kenya (180.6%) and the lowest in Ukraine (1.3%). The percentage in the United States was 7.3%, putting it in 124th place.

All 25 countries with the highest percentages of deaths from heart disease were in sub-Saharan Africa. Twenty-three of the 25 countries with the lowest percentages were in Europe.

Fatalities from road crashes for the world compared with 21.5% of mortalities from strokes. The highest percentage was in Qatar (166.1%) and the lowest in Bulgaria (2.5%). The percentage in the United States was 26.5%, ranking it 91st.

The countries with the highest percentages tended to be in sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. The countries with the lowest percentages were primarily in Europe.
