Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) may have missed the smartphone move entirely.  Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) have run away with the market.  Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) found out that its purchase of Palm Inc. was nothing more than a tax write-off.

Out at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas came word in a press release that the
first LTE Windows phones in the U.S. were coming exclusively to customers of AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T).  Sound familiar with the pHone launch?

The release notes that the new 4G LTE Windows phones from HTC and from Nokia Corporation (NYSE: NOK) are planned to arrive in the first half of 2012, showing that AT&T’s goal is to deliver the best mobile broadband experience in the industry.

There is just one problem… Many smartphone users have already dumped Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM) for the iPhone or for a Droid phone.  It seems as if the client preference is not to switch to a Windows phone.

Is it fair to ask if Steve Ballmer really just wants an iPhone?  Or if the younger of Gates’ has managed to get an iPhone.
