Toyota (TM) Launches Prius c–53 MPG Hybrid

Toyota (NYSE: TM), as expected, released it Prius c, which the company says gets 53-miles per gallon in city driving. The release was done at the Detroit Auto Show. The car will retail for $19,000

The new Prius enters a market already crowded with clean diesel, hybrid, electric, and high-mileage gas engine vehicles. The original Prius is the best selling hybrid in the world with total sales over its life of in excess of 2 million.

Toyota must rebuild its US sales after a hard 2011 in which production interruptions due to the Japan earthquake hurt supplies

According to Toyota:

The letter “c” represents “city” in the Prius c name. Designed to function as an urban-friendly vehicle with an engaging driving experience, hatchback utility, and a city fuel economy rating of 53 mpg, Prius c offers the highest city mpg rating of any vehicle without a plug.  The all-new Prius c joins the Prius Family, which includes the third generation Prius Liftback, the versatile new Prius v and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will debut in early 2012.
