The most valuable company in the US, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), claims to have created some 514,000 US jobs. The company currently employs 47,000 people on its own and says it supports 257,000 jobs at other US companies that make, sell, or transport components and finished products. Apple also claims that 210,000 US jobs have been created developing apps for the company’s products. That adds up to 514,000.

Apple notes that it continues to maintain its call centers in 15 US states, supporting around 10,000 customer support personnel. Apple Stores employ nearly 24,000 staff at 246 stores in 44 states.

The company is trying to counter recent criticism for the number of offshore jobs it supports in manufacturing. For example, Chinese assembler Hon Hai Precision Industry, better known as Foxconn, employs more than 92,000 workers to assemble products for Apple and many other US high-tech product makers.

Apple does not indicate that it directly employs any manufacturing workers in the US, nor does it say how many full-time equivalent employees work for its contract manufacturers either in the US or overseas.
