The 4 Stocks That Carried the DJIA

October 2, 2014: Markets opened mixed on Thursday and the three major indexes dropped below the break-even line early and stayed there until mid-afternoon when traders looked to be interested in buying on the recent dip in equity prices. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 0.02% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.04%, and the Nasdaq Composite up 0.24%.

The Dow 30 stock posting the largest percentage gain ahead of the close today was Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) which traded higher by 1.85% at $89.32. The stock’s 52-week range is $69.85 to $90.29. Volume was about 10% below the daily average of around 3.7 million shares. The company said yesterday that the launch of its new LeBron 12 basketball shoes would be delayed, but the stock bounced solidly higher after the noon hour.

The Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS) traded up 1.34% today at $183.12. The stock’s 52-week range is $151.65 to $188.58. Goldman is leading a consortium of financial firms that will be launching a new instant messaging service for professionals. Volume was about equal to the daily average of 2.5 million shares.

The Home Depot Inc. (NYSE: HD) traded up 1.23% at $92.14. The stock’s 52-week range is $73.74 to $93.75. Trading volume was about 30% below the daily average of around 6.7 million shares. The company had no specific news today.

Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) traded up 0.52% at $92.34 in a 52-week range of $84.79 to $104.76. Volume was about 15% above the daily average of about 9.6 million shares. The company signed a non-commercial, cooperation agreement with Mexico’s national oil company, Pemex, today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 18 stocks are set to close lower today, and 12 are on track to close higher.
