March 8, 2019: The S&P 500 closed down 0.2% at 2,743.00. The DJIA closed flat at 25,448.32. Separately, the Nasdaq closed down 0.2% at 7,408.14.
Friday was a down day for the broad U.S. markets. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones really pulled back from their highs this week, which would make this the first down week in a while. Crude oil backed off again in the session. The S&P 500 sectors were more or less split down the middle. The most positive sectors were utilities and materials up 0.4% and 0.2%, respectively. The worst performing sectors were energy and consumer discretionary down 1.9%, and 0.7%, respectively.
Crude oil was last seen down 1.0% at $56.07.
Gold was last seen trading up 1.1% at $1,300.60.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage loss ahead of the close was Noble Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NBL) which traded down about 5% at $21.41. The stock’s 52-week range is $17.11 to $37.76. Volume was about 6.6 million compared to the daily average volume of 6.5 million.
The S&P 500 stock posting the largest daily percentage gain in the S&P 500 ahead of the close was Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST) which rose by about 5% to $227.82. The stock’s 52-week range is $180.83 to $245.16. Volume was 6.5 million compared to the daily average volume of 6.1 million.
