The fall movie season has so far been somewhat less than overwhelming. This week’s main entrant may not change that, but “The Equalizer” starring Denzel Washington is touted for the largest opening weekend yet in the fall season, which began with the first weekend after the Labor Day holiday.

The top grossing movie for the season so far is “No Good Deed,” which was released two weeks ago and did $24.25 million in receipts on its opening weekend and has piled up $41.5 million in two weeks. “The Equalizer,” which is based on a 1980s TV program, is opening on 3,246 screens and Box Office Mojo expects receipts for the opening weekend to reach $32 million. The film is being released by Sony Corp.’s (NYSE: SNE) Columbia studios. “No Good Deed” is from Sony’s Screen Gems label.

The other film opening in wide release this weekend is the stop-motion animation “The Boxtrolls.” The film is opening on 3,464 screens and is expected to post receipts of $14 million for Focus Features, the art house studio for NBCUniversal and Comcast Corp. (NASDAQ: CMCSA).

Last weekend’s top release, “The Maze Runner,” notched $32.5 million in its opening weekend, and Box Office Mojo expects the film from Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. (NASDAQ: FOXA) to earn $15.6 million on its second weekend.

One more movie to note for the weekend is “The Song,” which is opening on around 300 screens. The country music film targets a Christian audience, and Box Office Mojo notes that films of this kind can often produce surprising results. The movie comes from independent studio Samuel Goldwyn.
