Peter Fonda died at age 79 of complications of lung cancer. He was part of Hollywood royalty, son of screen legend Henry Fonda and younger brother of megastar Jane Fonda. The actress and activist said, “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother, the talker of the family.”

Over the course of a movie career that ran from 1963 film “Tammy and the Doctor” to “The Last Full Measure,” which will not be released until later this year, he made 71 feature films.

Fonda is best known for “Easy Rider,” released in 1969. He starred in the movie with Jack Nicholson, one of that future star’s earliest movies, and Dennis Hopper. Fonda was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for that film. The other movie for which he received an Oscar nomination was “Ulee’s Gold,” released in 1997. He was nominated for Best Actor. He won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2000 (“The Passion of Ayn Rand”) and 1998 (“Ulee’s Gold”). He was nominated for three Screen Actors Guild Awards for “3:10 to Yuma” (2008), “The Passion of Ayn Rand” (2000) and “Ulee’s Gold” (1998). His star was put on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003.

The Wrap said of “Ulee’s Gold,” his comeback film, “Fonda had a career highlight with a dramatic turn in ‘Ulee’s Gold’ in 1997, playing a reclusive and stoic beekeeper in Florida who works to prevent his son and granddaughter from suffering from drug abuse.” These are the 100 best movies of all time.

Even though Fonda was never as famous as his father and sister, he was much beloved in Hollywood. Upon his death, famed actor and director Guillermo del Toro tweeted:

Peter Fonda- actor, director, dearest man. Gentle, generous, wise soul. Seek Easy Rider, yes- but also seek The Hired Hand. He helped changed Cinema, but he also lived a life full of love and made this world better.
