The Battle of Midway was a famous WWII conflict that came roughly six months after Japan’s tragic attack on Pearl Harbor. As Japan sought to control as much of the Pacific as possible, they focused their sights on the small Midway Island, which housed an American base. America’s success during this four-day battle represented a turning point for the allies and foretold of their eventual win.

During this decisive battle, aircraft were paramount to defeating the Japanese. One particular plane that was invaluable to America’s war effort was the Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber. Originally put into service in 1938, this plane carried two ty machine gun and had a bomb load of 2,250 lbs.

To identify every aircraft that fought in the Battle of Midway, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a catalog of aircraft from Military Factory, an online database of arms, vehicles, and aircraft. We ordered these aircraft chronologically. We included supplemental information regarding type, armament, speed, and manufacturer. Here, 24/7 Wall St. is taking a closer look at the aircraft that fought the Battle of Midway.

The Battle of Midway was one of the largest and most significant aerial battles in the Pacific during World War II, especially in terms of its impact and strategic outcome. It would ultimately shape the outcome of WWII, while demonstrating the power of aircraft carriers. Interestingly, even though decades have passed since the second world war and international politics have changed quite drastically, conflict still exists in the region of the world known as the Pacific, mainly due to China’s influence.

Here is a look at all of the aircraft that fought in the Battle of Midway:
