The fastest aircraft ever in existence is the NASA X-43, an experimental research aircraft that was just 12 feet long. This scramjet (supersonic combustion ramjet) powered plane flew at an incredible speed of Mach 9.6, or 7,366 mph. For context, Mach 1.0 is considered the speed of sound, so NASA X-43 flies at 9.6x the speed of sound. NASA X-43’s record-breaking flight happened 20 years ago now, and we haven’t quite reached any plane speeds nearly as fast since. However, military technologists could consider how faster-flying aircraft could benefit our needs in the future — and the needs of our Air Force. While military fighter jets may not move as quickly as NASA X-43, modern fifth-generation fighter jets do typically move at faster speeds compared to other aircraft. Their speed allows them to remain stealthy, escape attacks, and easily intercept combatants. Fifth-generation fighter jets also include new technologies like super cruise performance and low-probability-of-intercept radars, allowing them to overcome some of the obstacles from prior generations. However, not all newer jets are faster; military focus in recent decades has been on improving stealth and modernizing fleets. Aircraft that did not make it out of the prototype or proposal stage were excluded.
