The world’s strongest militaries have a few things in common, including a wealth of resources and superior technology. The American military is far beyond the militaries of other countries. In fact, it is known for being the top military power globally. This title is due to several factors, such as having an extensive arsenal of weapons and vehicles, top of the line naval equipment, and a defense budget that is difficult to compete with.

Though the United States takes the cake in the military world, several nations are close seconds. China’s military, for example, has seen much advancement in recent years, evolving to be quite powerful, especially when it comes to its navy. Additionally, China is well versed in cyber warfare. Another formidable country is Russia, which has positioned itself as a main player on the international stage. Russia is home to expansive land forces, including a massive number of troops. They also have access to nuclear power.

24/7 Wall St. took a deep dive into identifying the 30 countries with the strongest military forces. We compiled data from the 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. This report ranked 145 countries based on PowerIndex, a combination of over 60 categories, including military power, logistical capability, geography, and financial strength. The lower the PowerIndex value score, the more powerful a nation’s theoretical conventional fighting capability.
