In mid 2024, the USS San Diego, an amphibious transport dock, made its way from San Diego to Sasebo, Japan to support the needs of the U.S. military. Joining the USS America assault ship and the America Amphibious Ready Group, the USS San Diego will be used in a variety of missions and applications. Captain David Walton explains that the USS San Diego can transport Marines, their vehicles, and equipment. (Check out the 15 planes and helicopters that fly on American aircraft carriers.)
To maintain naval supremacy, the U.S. Navy continues developing various naval vessels and adopting them into its ranks. These newer vessel classes include Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and the Constellation-class warship. Many of these newer ships are highly advanced, such as the Gerald R. Ford-class. To identify the newest ships to make a splash in the U.S. Navy, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the military data site World Directory of Modern Military Warships’ directory of all active ships in the U.S. and cross-referenced with data from the Naval Vessel Register. We compiled data on all ships and submarines that have been commissioned in the service of the U.S. Navy over the last 5-6 years and ranked them by age. This list is current as of September 2025.
This post was updated on September 15, 2025 to include the most up-to-date information regarding newly commissioned navy vessels.
