Key Points

  • On Election Day 2024, young Americans voted for Donald Trump in numbers no Republican candidate has seen in recent history.

  • While support for the president has slipped with many demographic groups in recent months, Trump remains popular with Millennial voters, particularly in certain parts of the country.

Millennials are arguably the most influential generation in U.S. politics. Generally defined as those born between 1981 and 1996, the Millennial generation includes over 70 million Americans who are all over the age of 18 — a greater number of voting-age adults than in any other generation. Given their collective power in the voting booth, it is especially notable that Millennials are more likely than a typical American to have favorable views of the Trump administration.

According to a recent poll conducted by the public opinion research organization Morning Consult, President Donald Trump has a 51% approval rating among Millennial voters — slightly higher than his 48% approval among all registered voters, and well above his 45% and 41% respective approval ratings with Baby Boomers and GenZ.

Trump’s popularity with Millennials may be linked to unique economic factors — such as the Great Recession of 2008 — that have helped shape the context in which the generation lives, works, and perceives itself. A study of historical data conducted by the Pew Research Center found that, in each generation, the typical adult between the ages of 25 and 37 had a higher inflation-adjusted income than a typical adult from the previous generation did at the same age. Millennials, however, are a notable exception. Depending on education level, the median household income among Millennials is 4% to 11% lower than that of Gen Xers at the same age.

The same Pew study also found that 15% of Millennials were living with their parents in 2018, compared to 9% of Gen Xers and only 8% of Baby Boomers when they were a similar age.

While Trump’s particular brand of populism has a well-documented appeal among those who feel left behind economically, explanations for the administration’s popularity with Millennials are likely as diverse and nuanced as the 70-plus million Americans who make up the generation. And, as for any demographic group, public opinion of the Trump administration varies considerably across the country — and in some states, Millennials are far more likely to approve of the job Trump is doing as president than in others.

Using data from Morning Consult, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states where Trump has the highest approval rating among Millennials. States are ranked by the share of Millennial voters who approve of the job Trump is doing as president. Survey data used in this story was collected between January and April 2025. All 46 states with available data are included on this list.

Among these 46 states, Trump’s approval rating among Millennial voters ranges from 40.5% to 70%. Perhaps not surprisingly, many of the highest ranking states on this list are home to large conservative populations, and are places that Trump won by double-digit margins in 2024 — including Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and West Virginia. In each of these states, at least 60% of Millennial voters approve of Trump’s presidency. (Here is a look at the Americans who are most likely to approve of the Trump administration so far.)

The states on other side of the list, where Millennials are least likely to approve of the actions of the Trump administration, tend to be Democratic strongholds that Harris won decisively in 2024. In many of these states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, and Oregon, Trump’s approval rating is underwater with Millennial voters. Notably, in other reliably Democratic states such as California, Connecticut, and Illinois, the share of Millennials who approve of the job Trump is doing as president exceeds the share who disapprove. (Here is a look at Trump’s overall approval rating in every state.)

These are the states where Trump has the highest approval rating with Millennial voters.

Why it Matters

gageskidmore / Flickr

In the months since Donald Trump took office, his popular support has steadily eroded, and now the share of registered voters who disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president eclipses the share who approve of his administration. Still, Trump remains popular with a majority of Millennials, a generation with outsized political influence. Even in many states that consistently vote for Democratic presidential candidates, Trump has a positive net approval rating among Millennial voters.
