If you are looking for the largest city in the world, your answer will vary based on whether you are interested in area or population. The most heavily populated city in the world is Tokyo, Japan, with a dense population of 37.1 million people. In fact, there is no city in the United States within the top 10 most populated cities. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed data from Demographia, an urban development research group to identify the world’s 50 largest cities by area. We looked at the August 2023 edition of the World Urban Areas report, which analyzed 986 urban areas with at least 500,000 residents. Demographia defines “urban areas” differently than official boundaries or city jurisdictions. Instead, the group ranks these areas according to their built-up land areas. Demographia explains that these urban areas are connected “as an integrated economic unit, linked together by commuting flows, social and economic interactions.”

Why We’re Covering This

Although there are many downsides to living in big cities (i.e. pollution, traffic, etc.), there are also many opportunities. The world’s largest cities by area are interconnected by necessity, often showcasing good (or poor) transportation, communication, and resource allocation. In addition, large urban centers have their own unique culture and economic systems, which can provide insights into improving our own communities.
