Wal-Mart Uses March Madness to Sell TVs

Thinkstock

Just in time for Sunday’s announcement of the teams that will play in this year’s NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship tournament, aka March Madness, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) wants to encourage fans to upgrade their TV sets. The world’s largest retailer has reduced prices on a number of 4K sets, HDTVs and Smart TVs and is offering free expedited two-day shipping through March 19.

Some models and pricing are in line with Wal-Mart’s Super Bowl TV pricing. The free shipping offer is an enhancement from the Super Bowl offer of free value shipping or store pickup. Here is a list of selected models the store is offering.

A 55-inch LG 4K Ultra HD 2160p smart TV (55UF6450) is now selling for $698, a savings of around 22% from the list price of $899.99. This TV ships with a remote control but customers need to have their own source of HD programming in order to get the full benefits of the Ultra HD feature. This TV was available at this price for the Super Bowl promotion.

A 50-inch Vizio 4K Ultra HD 2160p LED Smart TV (D50u-D1) is selling for $598, a savings of $130 (18%) from the list price of $728.00. Again, the TV includes a remote and customers need to have their own source of HD programming. This TV was also available at this price for the Super Bowl promotion.

An RCA 50-inch 1080p LED TV (LED50B45RQ) is selling for $339.99, a savings of $210 (38%) from the regular price of $549.99. A remote is included and, again, customers need their own source of HD programming.

For the budget-conscious, Wal-Mart is offering a Sceptre 40-inch 1080p LED HDTV (X405BV-F) for $199, a savings of $200 (50%) from the regular price of $400.
