One thing you can say with certainty about Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX) is that it has expanded your vocabulary of Italian words. Is there anyone left in the United States who doesn’t know the meaning of cappuccino, latte, venti, grande, macchiato or mocha?

Here’s one to add: caloria. Bet you’ve figured that one out. The plural is the recognizable “calorie.” And while we may not think about the calories in our favorite morning eye-opener, there is a vast difference in the number of calories between a tall (12-ounce) cup of brewed coffee (5 calories) and a tall pumpkin spice latte with whole milk (263 calories). That tasty, seasonal latte delivers about 13% of the 2,000 daily calories recommended for U.S. adults.

We recently took a look at some of the high-calorie food and drinks that Starbucks offers, and in the interest of equal time, it is only fair to look at the low calorie coffee drinks on the stores’ menu.

We found eight tall coffee drinks that contain 100 or fewer calories. The calorie counts will rise as the drinks get bigger, but it may not be a direct proportion. That is, a venti (20-ounce) drink may not contain exactly 25% more calories than a tall drink. Here’s the list.

  • Brewed coffee: 5 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Caffé Americano: 10 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Iced coffee (with classic syrup): 60 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Nonfat cappuccino: 60 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Iced skinny latte: 70 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Caramel Frappuccino Light Blended Beverage: 100 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Nonfat Caffé Latte: 100 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Skinny Vanilla Latte: 100 calories, 0 grams of fat

Starbucks also offers three tall-size tea beverages with 100 or fewer calories:

  • Brewed tea: 0 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Teavana Shaken Iced Passion Tango Tea: 0 calories, 0 grams of fat
  • Shaken Tazo Iced Black Tea Lemonade: 100 calories, 0 grams of fat

One more Italian phrase for those of you who like to count calories: calcolo delle calorie. Maybe Starbucks will add that to our lexicon.
