Short Interest in 3D Printing Stocks May Have Found a Bottom

Short interest during the two-week period ending September 15 was mixed on the four 3D printing stocks we follow. Short interest dropped for three of the four stocks, while the fourth saw only a slight increase. Changes in short interest continue to be modest for the second consecutive period, and days to cover rose on three of the four stocks, which could indicate an overall decline in short interest on these stocks.

Short interest in 3D Systems Corp. (NYSE: DDD) fell 0.3% to 36.35 million shares. Some 34.3% of the company’s float was short. Days to cover rose from 11 to 17. In the two-week short interest period, the share price fell by 6%. The stock’s 52-week range is $11.00 to $49.68, and shares closed at $12.38 on Thursday, up almost 2% on the day.

Stratasys Ltd. (NASDAQ: SSYS) saw short interest rise by 0.1% in the first two weeks of September to about 13.43 million shares, or about 27.9% of the company’s float. Days to cover rose from 11 to 17. The share price fell about 0.9% in the settlement period. The stock closed at $29.73 on Thursday, up nearly 2% on the day, and the 52-week range is $25.31 to $125.00.

Short interest in ExOne Co. (NASDAQ: XONE) slipped 4% to 2.83 million shares. About 31.3% of the company’s shares were short. ExOne’s share price rose about 2.4% in the short-interest period. The stock’s 52-week range is $5.81 to $26.46, and shares closed at $7.25 on Thursday, up nearly 2% for the day. Days to cover slid from 12 to 11.

Short interest in Voxeljet A.G. (NYSE: VJET) decreased by 7.6% to 1.33 million shares, with days to cover rising from 15 to 22. The stock price fell by about 4.8% in the two weeks to September 15. The stock closed at $5.24 on Thursday night, down about 1.1% for the day, in a 52-week range of $5.14 to $15.51.
