Although it still trails Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Samsung’s Galaxy 8 became the top-selling smartphone using the Android operating system from Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) in the second quarter of 2017. Samsung shipped 10.2 million units in the quarter, along with 9 million Galaxy 8+ phones.

Apple shipped 16.9 million iPhone 7 units and 15.1 million units of the iPhone 7 Plus. Rounding out the top five selling phones was Xiaomi’s Redmi 4A, with shipments of 4.5 million.

The two Apple phones combined for a total market share of 8.9%, and the two Galaxy phones nabbed 5.3% of the global market.

The data were reported Wednesday morning by research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics.

Senior Analyst Juha Winter said:

The iPhone 7 remains the world’s most popular smartphone model overall, due to a compelling blend of user-friendly design, extensive supporting apps, and widespread retail presence for the device.

Executive Director Neil Mawson added:

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 has instantly become the world’s most popular Android smartphone model, due to its attractive curved-screen design, a rich portfolio of software apps, and best-in-class retail distribution across dozens of countries.

Xiaomi’s Redmi 4A took a 2% share, based on its position as the fourth-largest smartphone vendor in China and the second-largest in India. Strategy Analytics noted that Xiaomi is selling a large volume of devices through online channels in those countries and elsewhere.
