Category 5 Hurricane Mathew Heads Toward Cuba, Maybe Florida

Hurricane Matthew, which has been designated a Category 5 hurricane, is on its way to Cuba, and in the general direction of Florida. The National Hurricane Center five-day forecast puts is position in 120 hours just east of the Florida coast.

The National Weather Service commented:

Hurricane Matthew is centered near 13.2N 72.8W at 01/0900 UTC or about 317 nm(nautical miles) S of Port Au Prince Haiti and about 365 nm SE of Kingston Jamaica moving W at 6 kt. Estimated minimum central pressure is 942 mb. Maximum sustained wind speed is 135 kt with gusts to 165 kt.

Accuweather commented that the storm has been downgraded:

Matthew, currently a Category 4 (major) hurricane in the Caribbean, will take a northward turn this weekend, which will bring the storm along the Atlantic coast of the United States next week.

While there will be some impact from the storm on the U.S., how significant impacts are along the Atlantic Seaboard will depend on Matthew’s strength and proximity to the coast.

At this time, possible tracks range from an initial landfall along the southern Atlantic coast to a storm remaining a few hundred miles offshore.
