We have tracked the short interest in the following North American Solar companies as of June 28: Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ), First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR), GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GTAT), SunEdison Inc. (NYSE: SUNE) and Sunpower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR). In the Chinese solar sector we tracked the following short interest changes: JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO), LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK), Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE).

For China-based firms, the percentage of shares short is not available because the companies are also listed on other exchanges.

Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) saw short interest drop by 21.3% to 1.9 million shares, about 6.3% of the company’s total float.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ: FSLR) short interest drop by 6.9% to 13.58 million shares, which represents 19.6% of the company’s float.

GT Advanced Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: GTAT) showed an increase of 2.4% in short interest, to 50.86 million shares, about 43.1% of GT’s float.

SunEdison Inc. (NYSE: SUNE) showed a decrease of 18.7% in short interest, to 14.91 million shares. About 6.5% of the company’s stock is now short.

Sunpower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) saw short interest drop 0.9% to 11.9 million shares, 28.6% of the company’s total float.

JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: JASO) showed a rise of 14.7% in short interest to 3.87 million shares.

LDK Solar Co. Inc. (NYSE: LDK) saw short interest rise by 9.3% to 3.78 million shares.

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) showed a drop of 10.2% in short interest, to 16.62 million shares.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) saw a short interest rise of 2.2% to 13.08 million shares.

Yingli Green Energy Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: YGE) showed a rise of 18.3% in short interest, to 11.01 million shares.

Shares of both First Solar and SunPower have risen since June 24, and part of that rise is no doubt the result of some short covering. Both companies still have a fair portion of shares held short.

Among the Chinese solar stocks, JA Solar and Yingli saw big increases again in this period, even as share prices have risen. Investors probably believe that the share price increases will not continue.
