  • Foreign imports of Sig Sauer guns totaled 102,515 firearms, with 97.3% of these being pistols.
  • Sturm, Ruger, & Company, and Glock, were the next highest on our list, with high numbers of rifles and pistols sold respectively.
  • Tracking foreign gun exports is important as it affects both the U.S. economy and the power balance in countries across the globe.

Earlier this year, the Biden administration tightened the reigns on U.S. gun exports, particularly to foreign countries with human rights abuse violations. The administration’s policy changes are focused around reducing the risk of national security issues and violence within high-risk countries. But this could have a significant impact on the gun export industry. The firearm industry in America is hugely profitable, with exports totalling tens of billions annually. [Here are last year’s best selling guns in the U.S.]

As the only country in the world with more guns than people, the U.S. also has the highest number of civilian guns per person. A University of Chicago study found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately one in five U.S. households bought a firearm, with one in every 20 adults making their first firearm purchase. According to government data, there are more than 3,000 federally licensed gun manufacturers currently operating in the United States. And, while many firearm manufacturers in the U.S. operate on a smaller scale, the industry leaders have expanded into both domestic and international markets.

Using data sourced from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. compiled a list of the top companies in global firearm exports. Rankings were based on the total number of domestically manufactured firearms exported in 2021, which is the most up-to-date information at the time of publication. We considered both U.S. based companies as well as foreign companies with production facilities based in the United States.

During 2021, every one of the 24 companies on the list shipped more than 1,000 firearms abroad. The percentage of foreign sales varied, ranging from approximately 1% to nearly 90% of their American firearm production. Collectively, these 24 companies represented over 96% of U.S. firearm exports for 2021.

Similar to the domestic market, pistols are the preferred firearm type for international buyers of American-made guns. If we exclude revolvers, pistols (mainly semi-automic ones) represented over 50% of all exported firearms in 2021. Notably, for key gun manufacturers like Sig Sauer, Glock, and Taurus, pistols accounted for the majority or almost all of their foreign firearm sales in 2021. (For less than $500, you can own the best-selling pistol in America.)

Why This Matters

24/7 Wall St. is covering the global firearm industry because it is multi-million industry that affects the United States economy, as well as influences conflicts in other parts of the world. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, U.S. gun manufacturers exported almost 500,000 firearms in 2021. The U.S. firearm industry stimulates the economy through sales and tax revenue, but also through job creation in manufacturing, research, development, retail, and other industries. Furthermore, when a gun is sold in a foreign country, whether to a civilian or to a military, it has the potential to affect the balance of power in that nation.
