Polymer80, a company known for selling “ghost guns,” recently shuttered its doors. Ghost guns refer to nearly untraceable guns made from kits. As you can imagine, however, it can be difficult to track these weapons down when used to commit a crime. Polymer80 closed down after dealing with a spate of lawsuits which posited that the guns being sold in kits was not appropriate. Instead, people purchasing the kits should have to undergo background checks and come with serial numbers. Critics say that Polymer80’s closure suggests that its buyers were not responsible gun owners as they did not want to take the necessary measures to procure their weapon. While this may be true, it also represents another issue: gun owners potentially putting their safety, and the safety of those around them, at risk by using guns that aren’t meticulously produced and rigorously tested by our country’s best gun manufacturers. (These are the top-selling guns of all time, ranked.)

As of 2022, the latest year of available data from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), over 3,600 licensed gunmakers call the United States home. Gun sales have also surged in recent years, thanks to an uptick in global conflict and the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. In 2022, gun manufacturers produced nearly 13.4 million firearms, significantly higher than average. While 3,600 licensed gunmakers exist, the 25 largest gunmakers in our country produce 87% of all domestically manufactured firearms, highlighting the trust we place in these companies — and the top-tier reputation they’ve built. 24/7 Wall St. ranked the 25 most popular gun companies in America based on data from the ATF. We ranked gunmakers by total domestic firearm production volume in 2022. Among the companies on this list, 2022 production totals range from about 81,400 to more than 2.3 million. Can you guess who produced 17.5% of the country’s domestic firearms?

Gun sales have hit all-time highs in the U.S. in recent years — and trends in consumer preferences are reflected in firearm manufacturing statistics. 44% of Americans now live in a home with a gun. Americans are now more likely to own a gun for personal protection than for any other purpose. Partially as a result, pistols are now the best-selling firearm type in the United States. But sales of other firearm types, particularly rifles, have also surged — and the companies meeting consumer demand are the backbone of the multi-billion dollar arms and ammunition industry.
