It is not much of a house, measuring 2,500 square feet with three bedrooms and two baths. The listing makes the home seem inviting: “Close to all transportation. MUST SEE!” The drawback is that one of America’s best known serial killers use it as a place to hide bodies.

8215 W. Summerdale Ave. is in Norwood Park Township, Illinois, close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. The home is very near to one John Wayne Gacy owned at 8213 West Summerdale Avenue. Its structure is actually built near the footprint of Gacy’s, which was torn down in the early 1980s. Gacy killed 33 young men between 1972 and 1978. He buried many of his victims under the old house.

8215 W. Summerdale Ave. is for sale for $459,000. That is about what other homes that are for sale in the neighbor are on the market for. Norwood Park Township has a population of about 26,000. It covers 3.7 square miles. Eighty-two percent of the population is white. The median household income is $66,000, slightly above the national average. About 8.7 people live in poverty, well below the national average. It has 10,526 housing units. Realtor.com was fairly specific about what concerned buyers might think: “For a buyer who doesn’t buy into bad juju, it’s a perfectly fine buy in the Chicago suburbs.”

For a 30-year fixed mortgage with a 3.916% rate, a buyer who puts down 20%, the monthly payment would be $2,219. Of that $1.735 covers mortgage payments. The balance is for property taxes.
